Pretty Villages to Visit in Andalucia

Mijas

Mijas is famous for being one of Spain's whitewashed villages. Breath taking views, quaint streets lined up with white houses with flower pots hanging on the walls, intriguing legends, and the unbeatable Andalusian charm have attracted tourists to this little hilltop village since the 1960s. It’s about 40 minutes drive from the apartment.

Genalguacil

The MA8304 from Estepona to Genalguacil is either one of the prettiest or scariest roads in Spain. Wide enough for one car, it writhes through the pinsapo forests of the Sierra Bermeja, hairpinning down to the Genal — where you’ll find one of the finest river beaches in Andalusia — before climbing up to a hidden white village of unexpected beauty. Despite its tumultuous history of uprisings, banditry and reprisals, Genalguacil is a deeply tranquil spot that’s become dedicated to art, with 150-odd installations to discover in the streets and gardens and an arts festival held, inexplicably, in the fierce heat of August. It’s also about an hours drive away.

Setenil de las Bodegas

Named after its once flourishing wineries - bodegas - Setenil is probably unique among the pueblos blancos, white villages, of Andalucia. Where most pueblos blancos were built on protective bluffs and pinnacles, this town grew out of a network of caves in the cliffs above the rio Trejo north-west of Ronda. Its blinding white houses seem to emerge from the rocks, and some have rock roofs and even olive groves on their roofs. Its about an hour’s drive away.

Ronda

Ronda is a mountaintop city set dramatically above a deep gorge. This gorge (El Tajo) separates the city’s circa-15th-century new town from its old town, dating to Moorish rule. Puente Nuevo, a stone bridge spanning the gorge, has a lookout offering views. New town’s Plaza de Toros, a legendary 18th-century bullring, is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Ronda can be twinned nicely with Setenil and be sure to enjoy an olive oil tasting tour https://www.laorganic.es/en/oleotourism/ronda/
